This is not a criticism of interracial romance. That the romance is interracial. Wait, bear with me.Sure, there's a mysterious force right outside that's annihilating the human race, and we're all dying of thirst and hunger, but let's just take a moment away from all this despair and look into each others' eyes and remind ourselves that all you need is love. The romance. I think the first time I groaned out loud watching Bird Box was when Malorie (Sandra Bullock, our attractive protagonist) and Tom (Trevante Rhodes, our secondary attractive protagonist) found love in the supermarket that the gang went to one afternoon for supplies.The rest of the cast was fine, but it was really John Malkovich that I wanted to reach into my screen and rescue. He's an excellent, classically trained stage actor who went on to be nominated for or win Academy Awards, Emmys, Golden Globes and a host of others. He did as good a job in this role as any, but his performance only proves that great acting can't save a bad movie, and now he has been in a very bad movie. The actors. I feel genuine remorse for John Malkovich, especially, for doing this movie.The gang. Doomsday movies are like Scooby-Doo for adults, except less awesome. A ragtag group that wouldn't overlap in normal life are suddenly thrust into each others' company and forced to keep each other alive, which starts as a real chore but soon becomes everyone's raison d' être. And boy does it challenge our presumptions about people! The moron no one liked at first turns out to be sweet and even heroic the mean old drunk is actually a real mensch.Because that makes us feel good, even if we don't have any rational reason to be rooting for them, aside from that person being attractive and/or a recognizable movie star. show starts the same: An epidemic is sweeping the planet and our protagonist, invariably the first person we meet on-screen, is thrown into chaos as he or she struggles to figure out what's going on and then beat the astoundingly low odds of survival, which he or she usually does.
